From 28 May, an exhibition “THE DISASTERS OF WAR” is held at Louvre-Lens, a well-known museum for its architecture by SANAA, a Japanese architects unit. Some copperplate prints by Chimei Hamada that were collected by MoMA for the past exhibition “TOKYO 1955 - 1970” from 2012 to 2013 are lent and exhibited in Louvre-Lens for this coming exhibition.

LOUVRE LENS

Louvre-Lens opened in December 2012 as an annex of Louvre Museum in Paris, and gets a great attention from all over the world. This museum is located in Lens, a small city north of France once flourished as a coal-mining town, and designed by SANAA, a unit of Japanese architects Kazuyo SEJIMA and Ryue NISHIZAWA. Designed by great architects, who are well known for awarding the Pritzker Architecture Prize [the Novel Prize of Architecture], its surroundings-fitting, beautiful and innovative architecture is getting massive attention. They are also famous for designing the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in Japan, and a lot of other important architectures.

Having 12 sections for major wars from the beginning of the 19th century to our age, “THE DISASTERS OF WAR” shows how artists contributed to a growing disenchantment with war. Chimei HAMADA’s war-related copperplate prints are going to be exhibited.

The permanent collection room in this museum exhibits mainly the works that are the possessions of Louvre in Paris but hadn’t had a chance to be exhibited for a long time. They extend to ancient Greek arts, Oriental arts and a lot of sculptures. “Liberty Leading the People” by Delacroix is exhibited as a main attraction, and you could enjoy the permanent collection for free until the end of this year. The special exhibition “THE DISASTERS OF WAR” is held until October, so please appreciate this interesting event and museum.
